Well, with the Hitmonchan panel, it could easily be making threatening gestures such that the cameraman could infer what it's saying?

I mean, it doesn't address the inconsistency of it being "blablabla" instead of "Hitmon (blablabla)", but... it's something? I dunno, it doesn't come across well either way.

Reply Ultimate Yoshi, October 11th, 2014, 6:42 pm

@CapedLuigisYoshi: Note that I only generally show one or two panels when talking about something that can be seen in way more than just one panel. That's not the only scenario where it happened, it just so happened to be the first one I re-found after reading the pages of the comic that I did.

Sounds about accurate to me, although there are some parts of this comic that are great.

Pokémon comics seem to be hit-or-miss a lot. Must be a hard series to work your way into.

@BattleStarX: So is everything.

@Chunck.co: get rekt

Reply Sapar, October 12th, 2014, 11:05 am

Through hanging around with pokemon fans, I've learned that "ubers" are an actual thing in competitive play.

Other than that, though......eh. This does not look good.

Reply Chunck.co, October 12th, 2014, 1:15 pm

@some guy: What is Rekt exactly? because if you trying to complimant,complain,or insult me i should know what you are saying...

Reply Jarkes, October 12th, 2014, 3:17 pm

@Chunck.co: Are you one of the people who was on that Digimon co-authored comic where half the authors for that basically flipped their s*** over Ulti giving it a negative review?

Reply kwane, October 12th, 2014, 4:05 pm

@Jarkes: No he was in this one comic that we all thought was a troll comic so we joined but turned out to be a legit thing.

Up until I saw Pink-Haired Cyrus, I still had some hope...

Hey I know this was posted back in October, but I never responded because I couldn't figure out how to while also making the response as uncharged as possible. I have a .txt document on my Dropbox filled with similar but different responses that could each fill up three pages in Microsoft Word. They all take different approaches and, reading over them now, I'd definitely cringe if I'd have posted them. They're not butthurt or anything, but they definitely go off on some weird tangents that could easily be read wrong.

Wall-of-text responses to reviews of Pogeymanz are not uncommon, at all, but I figured it wasn't appropriate in this case and thus never got around to it.

So now, coming back around to this, I'll just write out my general thoughts.

1. Thanks for the review! You make some valid criticisms. I expected a low score due to the comic's bad track record with formal criticism, so I'm not disappointed in the score itself.

--
2. I am disappointed that you didn't finish reading the comic (at least in time to write the review), mostly because I requested a review primarily because I have extremely minimal response about the new pages (53 onwards, including the second Halloween Special). I've been unleashing them since September 2013 on pretty much all the sites and despite that, I'm fairly certain only you and a few close IRL friends gave any comments on them, but in any case it was limited (i.e. you only read from one of them, as far as I can tell). I'm convinced the newer pages are, on the whole, significantly better than the first 52, but I have little to no external feedback on them, so I don't know for sure! Maybe I should have been more specific when requesting your review.

3. At what point did you stop reading? Based solely on the images in the review, it looks like you ditched sequential reading somewhere around Page 15 (I'd guess at least before Page 18), which is ironically roughly where the comic shifts tone quite a bit from the meme-entrenched "immature" humor of the first few pages that you mentioned is a major reason why you were turned off of completing the comic. I'm not saying pages from 15 onwards are just fantastic and perfect in every way (in fact, I think they get really dull from Page 36 onwards until the new pages) but they certainly represent the comic maturing a slight (very slight) bit. They're certainly not just stylistic retreads of the first few pages, which are so rough and unbearable because I didn't have any aims for the comic at the time and I made most of them within hours of each other (Pages 1-5 were produced and posted in a 48 hour span of time, for example).

4. Concerning the Pokémon translator bit, consider this: aside from Hitmonchan, Alakazam, any legendary, and a Nidoking in one page (though maybe his trainer, a prominent character himself, also has one; I never specified), no Pokémon is ever coherently responded to by any human character except for the protagonist. Aside from the above exceptions, all Pokémon are treated as silent by all other human characters. Just look at Page 20, where Clair is introduced: her Dragonite talks its head off, but she never hears it.

I'll admit that the plot point did slip me a little later into the comic, as evidenced by the Nidoking scene, but Alakazam and the legendaries have telepathy while I always hoped Hitmonchan would be assumed to have learned human language à la Meowth in the anime. Also, Hitmonchan, Alakazam and Registeel talk so much that stuffing their dialogue in parentheses wouldn't be helpful when my panels are only the size of a DS screen. The saved space is pretty crucial.

EDIT: Forgot about Snorunt and the elevator operator in Page 59. But she said she uses telepathy to operate the elevator, so I'd deduce that's how she communicates with Snorunt.

My thoughts @Ultimate Yoshi: I've read the entire comic about 3 times, and I agree with some of your points but I think you are reviewing the comic too seriously. First of all, Bob (the ballz guy) is just obsessed with spherical objects. The sense of humor regarding internet memes is supposed to be satire. I agree with you that its name is not amazing, but that's not all people look for in a comic. One thing I particularly enjoyed about Pogeymanz was the character development, actually. Claire shows some funny development, as well as Anon becoming slightly more mature by the end of the comic. Also, regarding his name, I've thought about it and it's probably satire about 4chan, as the comic highly revolves around the internet. I do agree that the speaking inconsistencies are unusual, but Hitmonchan can actually talk because he is close enough to a human (at least that's my opinion). I disliked the movie subplot because it strayed too far from the plot of Team Nubzorz and Devinus, but it was still funny in some parts.

Overall, I'd give the comic a 7/10. I think you were being too grim when considering it, it's a lighthearted, humorous comic not meant to be taken seriously.
