Yiiiiiiiiiikes, that's dedication though to actually read other kirby comics and steal jokes from then too...jeesh

Reply BattleStarX, June 4th, 2014, 7:45 pm

Looks like my puns got lucky, I didn't see them in the review.

Reply Blizzard, June 4th, 2014, 8:20 pm

Ouch! Oh well I hope the next one gets a good review we have not seen a great score for sprite comics in a while

Reply witswithme, June 4th, 2014, 8:21 pm

OUCH. That's just...ouch.
Oooooooh, I'm now REALLY nervous about my comic that's gonna be about 8 reviews away...

Reply Redkirby, June 4th, 2014, 8:23 pm

I'm surprised you didn't criticize the fact that this comic also features Dr. Wily, as well as several other Megaman references.

Reply Luigi_96, June 4th, 2014, 9:20 pm

I respectfully disagree with this. Especially the part where you called it stealing.
My definition of stealing would be taking something and claiming it as yours.
What CLY's been doing is way more of a reference than stealing, because as far as I know, every time he's done this, he's at least said that it's not his joke.

Reply Ultimate Yoshi, June 4th, 2014, 9:27 pm

@Luigi_96: I see what you're trying to say, but there's a difference between a reference and what he's doing. I suppose it's not quite stealing if he's saying where most of it is coming from, but it's still using somebody else's joke. A reference is something completely different from taking something from another comic, which is what CapedLuigisYoshi did. A good example of a reference is how he used "boom-bassa-boom" sound effects for some explosions in the comic, which references both Paper Mario 2 and Torkirby. That's perfectly fine, but having entire punchlines, word-for-word, be exactly the same, or using the same basic concept as another comic entirely, that's not acceptable. At least, it's not to me.

Reply CapedLuigisYoshi, June 4th, 2014, 9:35 pm

...Mostly I'm just kinda weirded out by the comments about the empty end panels and the telling me to stop it... since I already did stop using that.

...Also don't think I've done a sans-dialogue comic since the start of the Dyna Blade stuff.

But ah well, the the important thing here is the lesson that I should deviate more from the canon plotstuff. Which is good, because in the past I've been legitimately concerned that I was going TOO far away from canon.

Reply Luigi_96, June 4th, 2014, 9:43 pm

@Ultimate Yoshi: Well, I guess when it's actually used as the punchline, that makes sense.
I'm just totally thrown off by the score. This comic is, to me, at the least a 5.
But then again, this is all your opinion and you have a right to it.

Reply godmoderncommander, June 4th, 2014, 9:50 pm

...I'll ask for a review later. I do meet the requirements, I just feel like I should at least get the current chapters done in my comics.

Reply Redkirby, June 4th, 2014, 10:29 pm

@Luigi_96: I sorta agree with you. Just because something rips some stuff off doesn't make it completely terrible. I can understand why Ultimate Yoshi would be mad at CapedLuigisYoshi for stealing one of his jokes, though.

I'm both terrified and anticipating my next review.

Also @Blizzard: I'll try.

Reply Ultimate Yoshi, June 5th, 2014, 5:10 am

@Redkirby: The ripped-off jokes and ideas only added to the low score. It was more the icing on the cake, to me. I still don't think the characters are very interesting, the visuals are eh, and the plot is too restricted and generic. Since there's no real sense of uniqueness with the characters or plot, having unoriginal content in the comic only hurts it further, hence the lower score. Without the borrowed content, it probably would've earned a 3.5 at the very least, the most I'd give is a 4.5, I'd have to really think about it.

@CapedLuigisYoshi: I'll admit, when I pointed those out I couldn't quite recall if those had been kept up in the later comics, but they were big enough issues that I felt they needed to be mentioned, similar to how even when there's been improvement in plot/characters in other comics I've reviewed, I still talk about what's wrong with them earlier in the comic.

One thing- it seems like some of you believe that 'Unbiased' means 'bad score'.

Reply Guest, June 5th, 2014, 9:10 am

GEEZ, that's gotta hurt.

Reply nyancat6650, June 5th, 2014, 4:37 pm

Oh, I had no idea some of those jokes were stolen... :O

Reply Quirby64_:D, June 6th, 2014, 1:49 pm

In my opinion, I disagree to some point.

Maybe, CLY was just a good fan of the comics he's "stealing" from, and paying a tribute to them or something? (Stupid, yes, but everyone has an opinion)

Reply YoshiKirbyFan (Guest), July 11th, 2014, 8:20 pm

I think the 'stolen jokes' are a nice nod to other really good comics. As for the sprites being to small...Kirby's Dreamland/Dreamland 2 was a GB game, I think he just wanted to capture the essence. The 4th wall breaking I also find funny.I disagree with some of the points mentioned here, but not all of them. Then again, when it's time for Ulti to drop the hammer,he really does it~!

I do not mind the joke referencing, but I do feel like the comic was rather...different at the start, compared to how it is now. My real gripes with the comic are, as follows:

-Overabundance of self-referential humor in the first chapter
-No other distinction between Kirby and Keeby besides color (Granted, this would only be a problem in the Gameboy arcs)
-Avoiding certain fight scenes in the first arc (Granted, Cly probably wasn't good at fight scenes, but using holiday specials to avoid them is a no-no. I didn't include the minibosses, since it would be annoying if you showed the full fight against them every time)
-Making the holiday fillers canon (The second arc has Kirby mention the mindwipe from the Halloween comic.)

Other than that, I think the comic is good. Not the best, but still enjoyable.

@Guest: Oh hey someone commented on this.

* Holy heck was it different. When I started KDA it pretty much was a rip-off of Kirby Origins, and that's reflected in a lot of the stolen jokes as well as stuff like Marx being a Popopo (I really should've made him a Noddy or something, but too late), Sir Kibble being Dedede's right hand man, and the existence of the Elder character.

* I think the issue there was less being self-referential and more being over-referential to other Kirby comics (as Ulti explored in the review itself).

* I always knew the Kirby/Keeby similarity thing would be a bit of an issue, and unfortunately my solution has usually been "keep Keeby and Kirby in different areas". Luckily, after I wrap up the Dreamland 2 arc there won't be any more color-deficient arcs, so my main concern will be instead with differentiating Kirby and Batamon.

* I'm still not good at fight scenes, but at least I learned my lesson and starting actually trying with them after Paint Roller or so, so that's something.

* There won't be any more canon fillers, although it's too late for me to retcon out the two that were.

* I'm glad you enjoy what I put out there, so thanks. :)

What would you say if someone used a punchline from another comic but they got permission from its author first?

Reply, July 11th, 2018, 1:35 am

@Sudux: this is the outdated review comic.
He made a new one but that on hiatad...

You can probs find a review of one of the bad ole' days of mine around here '-'
