Yep, Ulti is TOTALLY biased toward Kirby comics.

Better than the last one, at least.

I have to agree on Solar with this.
Like yeah our fanbase is huge but when you give a 9/10 to a comic with characters that look exactly like Kirby an have average comic making skills, that's kinda what I said before playing favorites. you could at least be honest about your reviews man.

Reply Ultimate Yoshi, January 7th, 2014, 10:03 pm

@SolarSpriter: The Sonic OC aspect didn't affect my review of this at all, just so you know. That's why I stated that while I personally am not fond of them, it's not that big of a deal and that I can overlook it. It's a personal thing, but there's a reason why I don't talk about it (or at least I try not to) in the same ways that I talk about the actual problems I find with these past Digimon comics that used them.

Kirby comics are a bit different, as for one thing, the games themselves recolor everything to an incredible amount, making it a little more justified in a way. Character appearance in sprite comics, really, though, is one of the least important aspects. As long as a character is entertaining, I could care less whether they were a recolor or a Sonic OC or whatever.

As for "dull panel layouts and incredibly boring visuals", it's not as if a single one of ANY of the comics I've reviewed (except Vulcan Z) have been attempts at professionally done, high-end comics. They're sprite comics, for the most part. I mean, yeah, a varied panel layout looks nice and all, but it's one of the least important visual aspects in these kinds of comics. For something adopting a comic book-type style, then yes, it's important, but when it comes to comics like these, I think it's better to get good characters and plot/comedy/both-depending-on-what-kind-of-comic-it-is. Sure, in the end, panel layouts might end up looking simplistic, but I don't think that really degrades the comic itself. Basic visuals such as resizing properly, decent-enough effects, proper background usage, decent text bubbles, that's what I'm looking for when it comes to visuals. Panel layout? I could really care less. If you personally prefer a dynamic layout and a high amount of effects, all power to you. That's perfectly fine. However, if a comic doesn't use them, that doesn't make them BAD. It's like comparing a fancy dish at a restaurant with something as simple as a home-cooked meal. Yeah, one looks fancier and is prepared more professionally than the other, but in the end, what matters is their taste, and if it looks amazing but tastes terrible, then you wouldn't want to keep eating. If they both taste great, then I don't think the outward appearance really matter that much in the end.

@darkthehedgehog53: Maybe you should read the description of this review comic before you make comments. I highly doubt I'm perfect at it, especially since people like you have been trying to point this out to me, but like I said in the comic's description, I always strive for pure honesty on my part. Maybe I don't succeed all the time, it's not intentional if so. I do my best to not have bias in these reviews, nobody's perfect. I appreciate you guys going out of your way to inform me that you feel I AM being biased, as I can work even harder to prevent this, but at the same time, I'm a regular person just like you, it can be hard and sometimes completely unintentional and unnoticeable.

Digimon? Is that some Chinese Pokemon knockoff or some shit?

@Advertisement: Yes.

Oh, look. Another Digimon comic full of SONIC fan characters.

Reply Syogren, January 8th, 2014, 6:57 am

@SolarSpriter: I don't think he's saying extra effects are pointless. He's just saying that plot and characterization matter more. And I'm sure he feels the same way on drawn and sprite comics.

Reply Ultimate Yoshi, January 8th, 2014, 2:53 pm

@SolarSpriter: Visuals are also the most opinionated part of a comic, and no matter what will vary between person to person. Something that looks fine to one person may look like a piece of crap to another (for example, you don't seem to like some of the comics that I've been thinking highly of because you're not fond of the recolors and panel layouts, whereas I myself am indifferent to recolors and panel layouts are something I really could care less about). I'm not saying that visuals aren't important, but if I were to rate a single one of the comics I've done from an artistic point of view, absolutely none of them would even be above a 4.

From what I can tell, you seem to be very interested in more visually diverse comics, which is perfectly fine. However, a lot of people are also perfectly fine with simpler visuals (myself included). You don't need a lot of pizzazz in everything, and not everybody wants it. It's not trying to get out of putting effort into a comic (at least, not always), it's just using a simpler style. Every author has their own, and that's great.
Plus, there are some people who, if they put in a huge amount of effort to put a ton of flair and pizzazz into a comic, it would:
A. take an incredibly long time to make, which not every author has
B. reduce the enjoyment one can get out of making a comic

Another important thing to note is that these reviews are basically glorified opinions. I've had experience in comic-making, sure, it's not an ignorant or unknowledged opinion, and I do try and put in advice and tips on how to improve but it's an opinion nonetheless, and it's only my opinion. If you personally have a different view on what makes a comic good, that's fine. I have my own opinion as well.

@SolarSpriter: On the other hand, if a comic is gorgeous to look at but the writing is really crappy, the writing is more likely to turn away readers. Like All-Star Batman & Robin. Great artwork by Jim Lee, terrible writing by Frank Miller.

And then you have guys like Rob Liefeld, who can't write or draw well worth crap.

I can see where you're coming from, but it seems like you're unintentionally ignoring the fact that most of the high scores Ulti has given have been for the writing AND the visuals, but mostly the writing.

Reply GabrielsThoughts, January 9th, 2014, 10:19 am

I wonder if Rob Liefeld and Frank Miller ever collaborated on a comic. I'm sure it would make a mint...

I'm actually quite shocked to learn that Liefeld can't draw well, since I was informed that Goro from Mortal Combat was based off of his parameters.

Reply Jarkes, January 9th, 2014, 7:19 pm

@GabrielsThoughts: Oh, god, the raging Linkara would do if such a comic actually exists...
